Searching the Calhoun County Court Docket
Start at the court itself. Every Calhoun County court docket search runs through official case systems. There is no single combined index. Public Circuit Court cases and eligible documents appear through WVPASS. Magistrate matters use the separate Magistrate Court Case Search. Enter a name or case number there. That tool returns no more than 30 records. It does not display the papers behind them. Grantsville ordinance cases take a phone call to Town Hall instead. The town posts no municipal docket portal online.
Before you begin, gather the party name, court, county, filing date, and case number if you have it. Search by case number first. A name match alone does not prove identity. Free browsing is not the same as free document access. An error message is not proof that a Calhoun County case is sealed.
- Choose WVPASS for Circuit Court or Magistrate Case Search for Magistrate Court.
- Enter the case number, or use both first and last name.
- Confirm Calhoun County, filing date, case type, and case style.
- Read events, entries, and disposition as distinct parts.
- Call the proper clerk for documents, certification, or date confirmation.
Two Calhoun County Docket Portals
West Virginia splits public trial-court access by level. WVPASS covers public Circuit Court cases filed from July 1, 1999 forward. Browsing case details there costs nothing. An eligible circuit document costs 25 cents per page. A nominal card-processing fee applies as well. Sealed, confidential, and juvenile material is excluded from the system. If a case seems missing, the official FAQ advises asking the Circuit Clerk whether it is public or non-public.
The Magistrate Court Case Search is free. No registration is required, and it can show case data, events, charges, disposition fields, and a document list, though the papers themselves must come from the Calhoun Magistrate Clerk. A third system handles exact Citation ID, Case ID, or Payment Plan ID searches, and it does not replace the docket.
| Channel | Best use | Limit |
|---|---|---|
| WVPASS | Public Circuit cases and eligible documents | Paid pages; restricted cases excluded |
| Magistrate Case Search | Name or case-number lookup | 30 results; no documents |
| Payment System | Exact citation, case, or plan payment | Exact match; $2 payment charge |
Inside a Calhoun County Court Docket
A Calhoun County court docket is a chronology, not a verdict. It lists events in order. A complaint may come first. Then come service, warrants, bonds, motions, hearings, continuances, orders, transfers, and a disposition. One event can close while the case stays open. A charge states only what was alleged. The disposition reports a result. Both entries need the later filings and entered orders for full context.
The official magistrate sample separates case information, charges, bond data, events, parties, and docket entries. An archived Circuit Express sample uses metadata, parties and attorneys, dates, hearings, and a line-by-line register. Current screens may differ, but those fields remain useful.
| Case number | The court identifier for one Calhoun County case. |
|---|---|
| Case information | County, court, filing date, type, and status. |
| Charges or claims | Allegations, not proof of an outcome. |
| Event schedule | Type, date, time, judge, and closure reason. |
| Docket entries | The dated sequence of filings and court action. |
| Disposition | The recorded result, read with later orders. |
Calhoun County Clerk Roles Differ
Three clerk roles lead to different records. The Circuit Clerk keeps Circuit and Family Court pleadings, entries, process, funds, and jury records. The Magistrate Clerk keeps Magistrate Court dockets. That office also supplies documents the statewide search never places online. The County Clerk handles county commission work, probate and estates, elections, vital records, and other county records. That office is not the Circuit docket keeper. Sending a docket request there just slows it down.
One event can touch several offices at once. A probate estate may begin with the County Clerk while a separate civil action belongs in Circuit Court. A felony complaint may start in Magistrate Court and transfer to Circuit Court. Follow the case number and court on the paper. Do not route every request to one counter.
The clerk you call also sets the copy route. Circuit records can be inspected at the counter or reached through WVPASS when the document is eligible. Magistrate documents stay with the local office even when their index data appears online. Family material may sit with the Circuit Clerk yet remain confidential under the rules governing family pleadings. Name the court and the document. Ask whether it is public. Confirm whether inspection, mail, pickup, or a certified copy is available, since that short description helps staff separate a docket question from a county-government or probate request.
Courts Keeping Calhoun County Dockets
The Circuit Court of Calhoun County serves as the general trial court in the Fifth Judicial Circuit. It handles felonies, major civil disputes, lower-court appeals, and other assigned matters. Magistrate Court takes misdemeanors, early felony work, warrants, emergency matters, and traffic. It also handles civil cases within its statutory reach. Family Court holds its own domestic jurisdiction. Each court keeps its own docket. A Grantsville municipal court could hear ordinance violations if one is currently maintained. Its status needs confirmation.
| Court | Docket covers | Search route |
|---|---|---|
| Circuit Court | Felonies, major civil, lower-court appeals | WVPASS, then Circuit Clerk |
| Magistrate Court | Misdemeanors, traffic, early felonies, civil | Magistrate search, then clerk |
| Family Court | Divorce and assigned family matters | Circuit Clerk, subject to privacy rules |
| Grantsville process | Ordinances if a court is active | Town Hall status check |
Calhoun County shares its Circuit judges with Jackson, Mason, and Roane Counties. Family resources are regional too. A judge's chambers can sit outside Grantsville while the local file stays with the Calhoun County clerk.
Calhoun Courthouse Record Hub
In-person records start at the Calhoun County Courthouse. It stands at 363 Main Street, Grantsville, WV 26147. Circuit and Magistrate functions share the building. The Circuit Clerk sits in Suite 205, the Magistrate Clerk in Suite 103, and public terminals support access even though the counter remains vital for certified circuit copies and magistrate documents.
The Calhoun County Courthouse profile on the official state Judiciary site lists each court's contacts separately.

The courthouse itself dates to 1940. It was completed through the Works Progress Administration. Official history describes cut stone, an Art Moderne form, and a square entrance tower. Exact counter hours, parking, device rules, and copy cutoff are not posted. Call before you travel. That matters most when you need an accommodation or face a firm deadline.
How to Find Calhoun Court Dates
A court date in Calhoun County can hide in several places. Docket events, orders, summonses, and clerk notices all carry dates. The magistrate event schedule lists the event type, the date and time, the judge, and any closure reason. Circuit hearings show up through WVPASS. The court posts no official daily trial calendar, so the case record plus a call to the clerk serves as the working schedule.
What if sources disagree? Trust the newest signed notice. Then call the court named on it. A continuance can close one hearing and open another. The case itself goes on. Circuit terms start in January, May, and September, but a term date is never a personal hearing date. The detailed Calhoun County court dates resource walks through each route.
Note: portal events can change after you view them, so confirm the setting with the clerk near the appearance date.
Calhoun Docket Codes Need Context
Magistrate codes pack a lot into a few characters. A Calhoun County docket may carry codes for a motion to continue, an event closure, warrant activity, or several bond steps. Sequence gives them meaning. A bond that is set, posted, and released is three separate events, and an event closed is not the same thing as a case resolved.
- Setting
- A scheduled event, not always trial.
- Continuance
- An order moving a hearing or deadline.
- Docket entry
- A dated line recording a filing or act.
- Disposition
- The result for a charge, claim, or case.
- Transfer
- Movement to another court or stage.
Never read a code alone. Read it beside its date, description, court, and the entries that follow, and if it touches an appearance or deadline, ask the clerk for the filed order.
Public Access to Court Dockets
West Virginia leans toward open court records. A statute, a rule, or a judge's order can still restrict a file. Online access is narrower than a walk into the courthouse. Neither route makes every paper public. Family pleadings, juvenile files, sealed matters, adoptions, mental-health cases, and safety-related cases each carry their own limits. Redaction can shield data inside an otherwise public record.
Key rules:
West Virginia Code § 51-4-2 states the general open-record rule.
West Virginia Code § 29B-1-3 sets FOIA request and response principles.
West Virginia Code § 49-5-103 limits juvenile-record disclosure.
A blank screen proves nothing. A missing result can stem from coverage, spelling, a new filing, a system failure, confidentiality, or sealing, and the clerk can confirm what may lawfully be disclosed.
Calhoun Court Access Went Digital
Calhoun County's technology arrived in layers. CourtPLUS went live on March 11, 2019. It serves staff and registered filers, and its e-file sign-in is not the public docket. In January 2024 the Magistrate Case Search put free case data online while leaving the papers with local clerks. WVPASS followed in March 2025. It added Circuit case browsing and eligible paid documents.
That sequence explains today's hybrid system. You can find a Calhoun County docket from home, yet a certified copy, an older file, or a magistrate pleading still takes a trip to the courthouse.
The official CourtPLUS status page records Calhoun's rollout date.

The capture records an e-filing milestone, not a public case-search screen.
Docket Records at the Clerk's Office
Reach the Circuit Clerk at PO Box 266, Grantsville, WV 26147-0266. Call 304-354-6910. The fax is 304-354-6173. When you write, give the case number, the document, the copy type, the delivery need, and your deadline. Ask about the current fee and payment method first. The clerk may allow inspection and copies but need not search a whole file or explain it by phone.
The clerk's displayed name varies by source. County and Secretary of State pages list Sheila or Shelia Garretson, while Judiciary pages show Maria Arnold. The phone number is consistent. Verify the name and email before sending money, protected data, or a time-sensitive request.

What Calhoun Filing Counts Show
The 2025 Judiciary report splits filings by court and category. Circuit columns display 40 criminal filings and 86 civil filings. Family categories yield 83. On the criminal side, Magistrate columns show 59 felony, 330 misdemeanor, and 12 worthless-check filings. Magistrate civil categories total 89.
These are filings, not people. They are not convictions, open cases, or one judge's workload. They do explain why two portals matter. Magistrate Court shows the larger displayed volume yet offers the lighter online record, and since category labels shift between reports, the totals are not a simple trend.
Free Calhoun Search, Paid Copies
Searching and getting papers are separate tasks. WVPASS case browsing costs nothing, but eligible documents run 25 cents per page plus processing. The Magistrate search is free too. It offers no downloads. Magistrate Rule 11 sets copies at 25 cents per page. Fax service runs $2 per page.
For a certified circuit record, ask which level you need: ordinary, attested, or certified. The clerk checks the original and copies every page. Certification and a seal are added when required. The applicable fee applies. Calhoun offers no online order form for certified copies. The request goes through the clerk.
| Action | Amount or route |
|---|---|
| WVPASS browse | Free |
| WVPASS document | $0.25 per page plus processing |
| Magistrate copy | $0.25 per page |
| Magistrate fax | $2 per page |

When Calhoun Cases Leave County
A Calhoun County case can travel to a bigger court. It is still the same case. When a magistrate felony moves up, it lands in Circuit Court. The search then shifts to WVPASS. Civil and family appeals usually head to the Intermediate Court of Appeals of West Virginia. Criminal, juvenile, abuse-and-neglect, and domestic-violence appeals that qualify take the Supreme Court of Appeals route instead.
Every appeal adds a new layer of paper. The Calhoun trial docket still shows the original filings. It also shows the notice that sent the case onward. The appellate docket then tracks briefs, argument, and the final order from above. The Intermediate Court posts a statewide current-docket calendar. You can filter it by year and argument type. Do not mistake that calendar for the Calhoun trial calendar. Before asking either clerk for a copy, know which record holds the item you need.
Federal matters run on a different track entirely. Calhoun sits in the Northern District of West Virginia. Clarksburg is its point of holding court. Those federal dockets live in PACER and CM/ECF, not WVPASS. Seeing the county named in a federal filing gives the state clerk no custodial role. PACER bills by the page and by the search. Confirm the federal case number and court before opening anything. CourtListener can help you find a case. Treat it as a mirror only, never as the official docket of record.
Calhoun County Court Dockets by City
Grantsville holds the county seat. It stands as the only incorporated municipality named in the official state planning source. Census TIGERweb puts its 2020 population at 494. The town's own pages list officials and contacts. Yet they offer no municipal judge. There is no court calendar and no docket portal.
Hold an ordinance notice? Call Town Hall and follow the issuing authority printed on the paper. A state traffic citation normally rides the Magistrate route, while a Circuit number belongs in WVPASS. The Grantsville docket search keeps those two tracks clear.
